This Is What Happens When Edison Meets AI

Humans send 2.6 million emails every second.

  • EasilyDo is now rebranded as Edison Mail, and has developed several new AI features such as Smart Reply and a Security Assistant.

  • To democratize data while putting our users first, Edison Software now presents Edison Trends — an enterprise solution for journalists, marketers, and retailers.

  • Download Edison Mail on iOS and on Android.

That’s equivalent to a nearly unfathomable 1.1 zettabytes in annual Internet traffic — but, in a single second.

Mail has come a long way since a computer engineer named Ray Tomlinson sent the world’s first email message in 1971. Yet for most people, email has become a daily exercise in drudgery. Drowning in business, personal and commercial messages, navigating your inbox — or inboxes — has become a major feature of daily modern life.

Making the email experience easier and smarter — — and better — is a problem that we took on fixing with our Email app as a company called EasilyDo.

Now we are continuing that work as a company called Edison.

Why Edison?

While our original name served us well, we decided it was time to adopt a name that truly reflected our brand’s core values. So, we changed the name of our company from EasilyDo Inc. to Edison Software.

Here at Edison, we’re focused on applying cutting-edge computing technology — in particular artificial intelligence and machine learning — to immensely improve your ability to manage your digital life.

That’s been our mission through the history of our company — to find smarter ways for everyone to manage essential digital tools like calendars, contact lists and email. And to show you our Edison effect, we’re announcing a series of initiatives to accelerate the process of bringing AI to your email inbox.

Edison Puts the “ai” in Mail

Last week we added some new intelligent abilities to our flagship app, now called Edison Mail, Email. (You might remember it as EasilyDo Mail or Email– search for “email” in the Apple app store, and it will be the first or second result.)

Available on both Apple and Android phones, Email (Edison Mail) already provided a host of intelligent services, like grouping key information automatically into simple folders — travel information, receipts, bills, package tracking. Booked a flight? We’ll automatically update you to gate changes and flight delays. Waiting for a package? We’ll update you on the status of your delivery. Overburdened with commercial messages? We make it easy to unsubscribe from any mailing list. And so much more.

We’ve introduced two new features. First, there’s Smart Reply, an auto generated set of three possible answers to any given email message, using AI techniques and powered by your own phone. Receive a message that says “Are we still on for lunch?” and you’ll get a set of easy to use responses. In beta testing, users chose one of the suggested Smart Replies in 13% of all messages sent.

Then there’s Security Assistant, which monitors for high profile hack attacks — and lets you know when your email address shows up on any list affected by data breaches. That kind of security alert service has huge value — and we provide it free to our users.

Democratizing Data While Putting Our Users First

We’re also introducing a new service called Edison Trends, an online dashboard that provides meaningful insights about national e-commerce purchase behaviors. The insights are fueled by our AI, which has been trained to distinguish transaction receipts from personal written emails in a mailbox — anonymizing and aggregating the information to keep it private — and then using that information to develop into research about national consumer purchase trends.

This is an important and valuable tool for research enthusiasts, journalists, marketers and retailers looking for insights on consumer purchase behavior. The enterprise version will provide businesses more in depth information about national purchasing trends, to help them strengthen their marketing strategies and offer more relevant options to their customers. For example, Trends recently revealed research stories that show the impact of popular e-commerce trends on brands directly, including:

Just as we are using artificial intelligence techniques to bring new value to email users, we are applying similar technology to extract insights on consumer purchasing behavior.

Our first priority is always to keep customer information safe and private. We have consulted with commercial and academic privacy experts to review our approach — and we have been certified for our approach to privacy by TRUSTe.

Edison Software’s mission is to create more intelligent products that serve you, leveraging the power of artificial intelligence. There’s a way to do it better. We’ll find it.
